San Diego Surf Film Festival Builds Wave of Success & Growth

The San Diego Surf Film Festival is celebrating its fourth year by expanding into a new venue and adding more sponsors. The SDSFF, which has experienced tremendous growth since its inception, has sold-out venues every year. This year’s festival, May 20-23, will be held at  the Sherwood Auditorium, which is located within the world-renowned Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego – La Jolla.

“Turning anyone away at the door is heartbreaking because all of these amazing films need to be seen,” said SDSFF director Pierce Kavanagh. “So we are really excited that this year’s festival will be held at the Sherwood Auditorium in the heart of downtown La Jolla to accommodate the ever-expanding San Diego and global surfing community.”

The SDSFF’s expansion has been made possible through the support of the event’s presenting sponsors, which includes the return of misfit pictures, Daphne’s California Greek, and Verb TV, with the new addition of Green Flash Brewing Company and Xsories/Xtreme.

“We’re stoked to partner with the SDSFF and all of the producers that will be presenting their films at the 2015 SDSFF,” said Jason Janecek from Xsories, which provides a range of audio, video, travel and computing gadgets for extreme sports enthusiasts. “Xsories is a direct descendant of the action sports film industry of the early 1990’s, and we’re proud to revisit our roots by supporting one of the greatest independent surf film festivals in the world.”

SDSFF 2015 is also proud to announce its community surf shop partners program, which will include Bird’s Surf Shed, Mitch's La Jolla, Patagonia CardiffBing Surfboards, and Surfy Surfy.
“We have aligned ourselves with the finest shops in San Diego to promote the festival on a broader scope and to raise awareness going into this year’s event,” Kavanagh said.  “We have a lot of exciting SDSFF events that will be happening and these shops will always be the first to know about them. Additional plans for these shops include filmmaker meet and greets, panels and Q&As, shaping demos, pre and post-parties, and much, much more.”

The San Diego Surf Film Festival has quickly become one of the largest of its kind in the world.  Last year’s festival attracted more than 2,200 people, who came from all over the globe to celebrate the art of surf cinema.
“The SDSFF's goal is to present the finest in international surf cinema year after year,” Kavanagh said.  “We have sold out the last three years in a row to a very receptive hometown crowd and are working hard to make the 2015 edition the best one yet.”
